Concerning Sharks: What is Our Problem?

What have sharks done to deserve this type of discrimination? In all honesty, what is humanity's problem? Just yesterday I wrote about shark attacks, and the media's perception of them. The only headlines, shark seem able to grab are ones ensuring their downfall. It has gotten to the point where a large percentage of the population believes that sharks kill (maliciously) thousands of people a year. I want the entire population to DRILL this statistic into their brains: SHARKS KILL A COUPLE DOZEN PEOPLE A YEAR. You may be saying, I've already covered this naught a day ago, you're right. What made it pivotal for me to write another post, was an article posted by The Boston Globe, "Sharks swims near paddleboarder, surfer off Cape Cod beach."

This is what the first paragraph stated: "A photographer captured a picture of a great white shark swimming alarmingly close to two people floating off the coast of Cape Cod, another indication that the predators are in no rush to leave the Massachusetts coast."

This article appeared in the section, Globe Must Read. I have no words to describe the disappointment I feel. I already take issues with all the articles condemning sharks when they attack someone, but this is just ridiculous. This article is on the front page of Boston Globe's website. The FRONT PAGE. Is there really so little going on in the world, that a shark swimming 'close' to a surfer gets a featured article? I understand the pertinence of letting people know, that they should be on a closer watch. But to publish an article such as this is just unreasonable. Now, sharks get a bad rap, when they swim NEAR someone?!?! Sharks have been in the oceans for millions, MILLIONS of years. We've been on this planet for 200,000 years- during this time we've managed to drive thousands of animals to extinction. Why is it so hard to accept that sharks are supposed to be in the ocean, and we are simply visitors? If you don't want to swim with sharks, don't go into the ocean!
